About Scribas

1. What is Scribas?

Scribas is a site where you can post and read memories. Memories of towns, of schools, of sports teams, even of TV shows, advertisements and military units.

You can write your own biographical Scribas Blog with memories of your own childhood, hometown, first school, family and friends.

The Flashbacks section of the site will allow you to enjoy some great multi-media memories from decades past. Great video clips of TV shows, adverts, home movies, documentaries and more besides. Listen to historical audio clips or our members reminiscing. And superb historical images to bring your memories flooding back.

Our Scribas Memory Pages are collections of memories written by the collective Scribas community for towns, schools, military units, sports clubs and much more.

The best place to start is our Getting Started page, which will give you a brief outline of what Scribas can offer you – and what you can offer Scribas and its community.

2. What languages is Scribas available in?

We currently offer Scribas in English and Italian. The Italian site can be seen at it.scribas.com. If you want to utilize the Italian Scribas site, you will have to sign up for a separate account. The two sites are independent of each other.

We have every intention of adding further languages to the Scribas network as quickly as possible, starting with Spanish.

If you are a Spanish, French, Chinese or German speaker and would like to join with our efforts in putting Scribas online in your own language, get in touch with us and we'll be delighted to give you the opportunity to work with a fast-growing internet site.

Scribas Content

3. What content can I add to the Scribas website?
There are several different content types that you can add to Scribas, once you are registered with the site:
  • Blog - each Scribas member can maintain their own blog in which you can recount stories from your past and recall your most wonderful (and perhaps the more painful) memories.
  • Flashbacks - video, audio and photo content.
  • Memory Pages - create a Memory Page dedicated to your town, school, sports team and more. Other members will contribute by adding their own content to it - and watch it grow!
  • Scribas Group - create a group and invite friends, family and other members to join.
  • Forum - if you have questions to ask or answer.
4. Can I see examples of what should be included in a typical Memory Page or a Scribas blog?

Yes, we have some demonstration pages to allow you to see the type of thing that typically gets posted on Scribas.

See the Demonstration Account section of our user guide for more details.

5. How do I make my Scribas blog look a little bit more interesting and professional?

Using our QuickTags, you can add some artistic formatting to your Scribas blog entries or indeed any content you put on Scribas: bold, italics, underlining, colored fonts, titles, links and even lists. For further details on this, see the Special Formatting section of our User Guide.

My Account

6. I am having a problem logging in or using the site. How do I get support?

Do you have your Scribas username correct? Be careful with capitalization of letters and the inclusion of any numbers, periods, etc. If you have lost your password, read the answer about this issue below. If you are still having problems logging into your account, get in touch with us, giving us as many details as possible concerning:

  • username
  • date you joined Scribas
  • e-mail address
7. I think someone has been using my account. What should I do?

First of all, you should take precautions to protect your password so that you can reduce the chances of someone else using your account to an absolute minimum.

If you do suspect your account has been used without your knowledge, contact us and tell us your username and what it is that alerts your suspicion. We will strive to look into the situation at the earliest opportunity.

8. I have lost my password! What can I do?

If you lose your password, you can go straight to the lost password page. There, you will need to use either your username or your e-mail address and a new, temporary password will be e-mailed to you. You will then be able to log into your Scribas account and, if you want, you can then change your password to something you would prefer.

9. I posted something on the site and it wasn't published. Did I do something wrong?

This is probably something related to the different user levels we have on Scribas. When you first register at Scribas, you are a "New Member" and this means everything you publish on Scribas will first be moderated. This is a process that usually takes less then 24 hours and helps to keep Scribas spam-free and family-friendly.

Very soon after you begin to use the site, usually a matter of days, you will become a "Full Member", which will give you full privileges for posting on Scribas. As soon as you become a "Full Member", most of these restrictions will be lifted.

Improving Scribas

10. I spotted something on a Scribas page that is illegal, hateful or inappropriate. What do I do?

We here at Scribas have very clear guidelines as to what it is or is not acceptable to post on the Scribas website. If you see something you feel goes against these guidelines, please click on the triangle icon in the top right of every page. Give details as to what you have seen and why you think it is unacceptable. We take our members' complaints about content very seriously.

11. What do I do if I find an error on the site?

We make every effort to ensure the Scribas website is error-free. However, with so much member-generated content, it is inevitable that some errors will slip through.

If you find what seems to be a genuine error on the main pages of the Scribas pages you can contact us and we will seek to put it right at the earliest opportunity.

12. I would love to see a new feature on Scribas. Who do I ask?

We are always looking for suggestions about new features to add to Scribas, so we would welcome suggestions from you. Get in touch with us and we will look at any recommendations you send our way.

You can also post on the Suggestions and Help forum.

Scribas For Others

13. I would like to include some content I saw on Scribas at my website. Am I allowed?

While we would encourage everyone to spread the word about the Scribas site, you need to be cautious about copying content directly from the site. We would recommend reading our Copyright policy to understand what is and is not possible. Using more than a couple of sentences from Scribas on an external website would require the express permission of Scribas, so you would need to contact us to gain the necessary permission to reproduce content in a publication, on a website or in any other form.

14. I would like to place a link on my site to my Scribas page. Do you have icons for this?

Yes, if you go to our Link To Us page, you will find both logos and code to make linking to us simpler. Remember you don't have to link to our homepage. If you have a website about New York, for example, there's no reason why you can't link to our New York Memory Page.
